Wings of D’sire

Live from Soft Centre 2023

Reasonable minds differ at Redshift HQ on many things, the habit of listening to mixes being one of them. Sam, for all his love of discovering new music – and maybe for that reason – rarely finds himself on Soundcloud. Luca, on the other hand, dazzles with his ability to recall where tracks have been previously played and by whom. And me, well, I’m still stuck on the Box Elder set from Whimsy of an Imp 2024…

For those who do find themselves listening to mixes, this series is for you: one recommended mix per week. Maybe some words, even some reflections.

———

I returned from Mach 1 with the usual gamut of post-festival feelings: extreme gratitude, weariness and a general apprehension about whether I’d ever be able to return to the state of bliss that the weekend cradled me in. Fortunately, with Outsider around the corner and a stack of Vivid events on the dancecard, it’s feeling like a very exciting time to be back based in Gadigal. As a homage to the city, the mix of the week is Wings of D’Sire – a Gadigal-based duo consisting of D-Grade and Wingnut – playing on home turf at Soft Centre 2023.

Heads should recognise the first track (The Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow, a 2000s classic), and generally revel in the ensuing glitch and high-octane shapeshifters that will have you bass-facing and dancing in the kitchen like a kid on Christmas Day.  From Autechre to A Strange Wedding (alphabetically, I appreciate that’s not a lot of ground to cover), with even a nod to Sneaker Pimps, the duo lay down two hours of seriously interesting and active dance music, with a generous serving of French tekno. What better a panacea for the post-Mach weltschmerz? Please Wings of D’Sire, can I have some more?
