Mix of the Blank: Triple Header

Local content rules? Local content rules

Redshift’s C-Suite had a triple-header a few weekends ago at Vivid: (1)  Jeff Mills; (2) Erika de Casier with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra; and (3) Earl Sweatshirt and Mike. Takeaway observations respectively: (1) the crowd that came out was much more diverse (particularly age wise!) than what I normally see at events, which was really exciting; (2) whoever organised the Vivid music program this year deserves a handshake; (3) way more wholesome than what I was expecting for a rap concert.

One of the most exciting things of being back in a big city (at least by Canberra standards) is having a genuine menu of events on any given weekend. Too often though, this can mean scanning for whichever touring artists are passing through, at the expense of supporting the city’s many local talents.

What follows, then, is a triple-header recommendation of mixes from artists all based on Gadigal land.

First off is Connor Sinn’s (Mr Yu) opening set at the Motion Potion x Club Freda’s event back in April, which warmed the floor for Kleo. Poignantly, that month saw the end of Freda’s programming of The Abercrombie’s Club and Rooftop. For those who dream about Houghton, this set’s for you: two ‘groove-maxxing’ hours of sinuous electro and progressive house cuts, including Richie Hawtin classics and a very tastefully slowed version of Jas’ ‘Belly’.

Second is Kate Stanbridge (f0ulplay) on The Midday Mix for fbi.radio back in September 2025. When I heard BLNDFLD’s, ‘Lost In The Forest’ creeping in as the second track, it felt like being lowered into a warm bath: immersive, natural, replenishing. The warmer ambiance gives way to some darker tones – including some gorgeous hypnotic techno selections from Semantica Records and Lowless – before embarking on the tour de trance. Here, we shift from the introspective register to faster, peak time tempos. For more f0ulplay, make sure to check out her weekly show on fbi.radio from 7–9am on Saturdays!

And last is Chintan Mistry (DJ Mistry) on Night 2 of the Mach One festival earlier this year. Actual chills. I’d written some words about DJ Mistry in the lead-up to Mach One. Words including ‘knee-buckling’, ‘heady’ and ‘not a phone or Club-Mate in sight’. Those feelings only burn more intensely today. The first track (Yin Yang Audio – Orion) is pure steeze: thundering drums in a call and response with a snarling synth line, pulling you deeper. Over the next two hours, we oscillate between moments of incredible lightness (with tracks like Skip Club Orchestra’s ‘DM4’) and giddy French mental tracks like Karmal’s ‘Pointe de Grave’. And as the darkness began to recede from the dancefloor – that same dancefloor from Tangerine’s algorithm-busting clip last year – DJ Mistry masterfully orchestrated a soft landing that Sybil took off from to welcome in the day…
